Reading & Writing Tutoring in Hollis & Jamaica, Queens

A difficult chapter, a blank page, or an essay that needs revision can slow a student down. Star Tutoring Group offers in-person reading and writing support at our Hollis and Jamaica centers. Small-group tutoring is our core format, and individual sessions are available when a different pace or focus fits better.

Request a free consultation and tell us the student's grade, current class or assignment, and preferred center. A tutoring advisor will help identify a useful starting point.

Reading: understand and explain the text

Tutors can help students practice finding a main idea, identifying evidence, building vocabulary from context, and explaining what a passage means in their own words. Sessions can use the book, article, or class material the student is working on, so practice connects to schoolwork.

Writing: plan, draft, and revise

Writing support can start with an outline or a rough draft. Students can work on a clear claim, paragraph structure, relevant evidence, transitions, sentence clarity, and editing. Tutors guide the process and give feedback; the student remains the author of the work.

Support by school stage

Elementary and middle school: Reading comprehension, paragraph writing, grammar, and building confidence with longer assignments. See our elementary and middle school tutoring guide.

High school: Close reading, essays, research assignments, and writing for current classes. Students preparing for SAT or ACT English and reading sections can also explore our SAT and ACT prep guide. See high school tutoring for the broader coursework approach.

Introductory college courses: Reading and writing support may be available depending on the course and tutor fit. Share the syllabus or assignment description when you contact us.

What should a student bring?

A recent assignment, teacher comments, rubric, book passage, or draft gives the tutor something concrete to discuss. If the student does not have one yet, tell us which skill feels hardest and what is coming up next. We will discuss the goal and whether a small group or individual session fits; compare tutoring formats.
