Science Tutoring in Hollis & Jamaica, Queens

Science can feel difficult when a class moves from memorizing terms to explaining why something happens. Star Tutoring Group offers in-person science support at our Hollis and Jamaica centers. We start with the student's current course and the topic causing trouble. Matched small groups are our core format; individual sessions are available when a different pace or focus is a better fit.

Request a free consultation and tell a tutoring advisor the student's grade, science course, current challenge, and preferred center. We will discuss a useful first focus before recommending a session.

Start with the classwork in front of the student

Bring a recent quiz, assignment, class notes, diagram, lab instructions, or teacher's topic list. The tutor can use that material to identify what is unclear, revisit the underlying idea, and practice applying it to a new question. Students who are keeping up can prepare for a difficult unit before the next assessment.

Skills that carry across science courses

Explain the concept. Move beyond a definition to describe a process, compare two ideas, or explain what changed and why.

Work with evidence. Read a graph or table, notice a pattern, and support an answer with observations from the material provided.

Use math in context. Set up a calculation, check units, and interpret what an answer means. For broader number and algebra support, see our math tutoring guide.

Communicate clearly. Organize a short explanation or revise a response using teacher feedback. Tutors guide the student's reasoning and writing; the student remains the author. See our reading and writing tutoring guide for more on those skills.

Support by school stage

Elementary and middle school: Build vocabulary, make sense of diagrams and experiments, and connect observations to a clear explanation. See elementary and middle school tutoring.

High school: Focus on the student's current science course, assignments, and upcoming tests. A tutor can help connect concepts, calculations, graphs, and written responses. If a New York State exam is approaching, see our Regents exam prep guide. Our high school tutoring guide explains the wider coursework approach.

Introductory college courses: Ask about tutor fit for the specific course. Please share the syllabus or assignment before scheduling; availability depends on the subject and tutor.

What happens next?

Tell us what the student is studying, what they have tried, and when the next assessment or assignment is due. A tutoring advisor will discuss whether a matched small group or an individual session makes sense. Request a free consultation to get started; there is no charge for that first conversation.
